ABOUT THIS PROJECT
The City Park Channel at Main Street project is a major flood resiliency and multimodal improvement in the heart of Broomfield’s Community Park. The City and County of Broomfield and Mile High Flood District are partnering on the project, with Naranjo Civil Constructors serving as the general contractor and Muller Engineering Company leading the design. Western States Reclamation is supporting the work with utility construction and revegetation.
A defining feature of the project is the integration of 100-year storm conveyance improvements with a new grade-separated pedestrian connection beneath Main Street. The existing channel will be lowered approximately four feet while Main Street is raised about 1.5 feet, creating space for a new ADA-accessible pedestrian underpass and a larger concrete box culvert designed to safely convey major storm flows without overtopping the roadway. This approach improves flood protection and everyday connectivity at the same time, creating a safer crossing for pedestrians and cyclists through one of Broomfield’s most active public spaces.
The project also includes channel grading and stabilization, a sculpted concrete drop structure west of Main Street, reconstruction of bike and pedestrian facilities, utility relocations, improvements to the Harry Brown Ditch irrigation crossing, and restoration of disturbed areas with native vegetation. The work requires careful coordination around existing roads, trails, utilities, irrigation infrastructure, and active park uses.
This phase is part of a broader effort to improve City Park Channel from US 287 to Main Street, reduce flood risk, and improve the long-term function of the drainage corridor. By combining heavy civil construction, floodplain improvements, multimodal access, and ecological restoration, the project will provide a more resilient channel system while creating a safer and more connected Community Park for Broomfield residents.
