Lake George

The Lake George Dam Removal project, undertaken by Naranjo, aimed to revitalize the aquatic ecosystem surrounding Lake George. This involved the installation of two cast-in-place box culverts (4×6) and a 71” corrugated metal pipe extension as part of road widening efforts. Additionally, the project included robust bank protection measures, including soil lifts and riprap armoring, to safeguard against high water flooding events. To ensure the long-term stability of the stream, Naranjo executed sediment removal upstream of the dam, effectively eliminating 70 years of accumulated sediment. The removal of the dam itself was a pivotal step in improving fish migration upstream, fostering ecological balance in the region. One of the notable aspects of this project was the innovative dewatering approach employed by Naranjo. Temporary sheet piling was installed to manage dewatering operations, including the implementation of a 700 ft clearwater diversion utilizing muscle wall and liners. This method ensured that excavation operations proceeded in dry conditions, preventing any adverse impacts on the river’s natural flow. Importantly, it also eliminated sediment deposition downstream by preventing head cutting during dam removal. Through careful evaluation and continuous improvement, Naranjo addressed challenges encountered during the project, notably issues with the liner for clearwater diversion.

To enhance durability, mirafi and additional liner materials were incorporated, guaranteeing the long-term sustainability of the channel. This project exemplified successful collaboration with all project partners. Naranjo prioritized timely and comprehensive scheduling and submittals, ensuring seamless coordination among all stakeholders. This proactive approach contributed significantly to the project’s overall success.
