ABOUT THIS PROJECT

The Lipan Pond Improvements project is a collaborative effort between the Mile High Flood District (MHFD) and Denver Parks & Recreation (DPR) to enhance the function, accessibility, and ecological value of Lipan Pond and its surrounding open space corridor between West Alameda Avenue and West Bayaud Avenue. Naranjo Civil Constructors is serving as the prime contractor, with Muller Engineering Company leading design and engineering services, Stream Landscape Architecture providing landscape architecture and public space design, and Western States Reclamation delivering revegetation, erosion control, BMP installation, and irrigation system improvements.
The project focuses on improving pond infrastructure, recreational amenities, and long-term environmental resilience within this highly visible urban open space. Planned improvements include new concrete terraces and forebay features, enhanced pedestrian circulation through boulder step pathways, installation of a new drinking fountain waterline, construction of shade structures, and landscape enhancements designed to improve visitor experience while supporting long-term site sustainability.
A central goal of the project is creating a more welcoming and resilient public space while preserving the natural character of the corridor. Native revegetation, irrigation improvements, erosion control measures, and stormwater best management practices are integrated throughout construction to strengthen ecological function and improve long-term maintenance outcomes. These improvements will help stabilize disturbed areas, support urban wildlife habitat, and enhance the overall health of the pond environment.
The project team is committed to minimizing impacts to the surrounding community through careful construction phasing, pedestrian detours, environmental compliance measures, and ongoing coordination with local stakeholders. By combining infrastructure improvements, public space enhancements, and ecological restoration, the Lipan Pond Improvements project will create a more accessible, sustainable, and enjoyable community asset for Denver residents and visitors alike.
